SF Housing Authority Reopens Public Housing Waitlist
By Leisa Boswell, Financial Services Associate
Extra! Extra! Read all about it! San Francisco Housing Authority will open the public housing waitlist to homeless individuals and families for five days only starting January 13th, 2015 and ending January 18th, 2015! The Center is hosting drop-in hours to support community members in filling out the application. Check the dates and times below.
It seems silly to use such an exaggerated headline just to inform the community that they will now be able to get on a waitlist for a limited number of public housing spots but the reality in San Francisco is that this is actually a huge deal.
Not only has San Francisco been the most expensive place to rent in the country for five months running now, beating out even the swankiest of locales like Manhattan, Los Angeles and, Washington D.C. according to real estate website Zumper.com’s analysis but also the city’s public housing and housing choice voucher program (formerly Section 8) waitlists have been closed for years due to high demand and low inventory.
The obscenely high rents in San Francisco are pricing out the city’s middle and low income individuals and families forcing them to either leave the city or face homelessness. This is to say nothing of the city’s most vulnerable population of already homeless individuals and families. During the last annual Homeless Count, nearly one-third or 29% identified as LGBTQ.
This is why the San Francisco Housing Authority opening the public housing waitlist for five days starting January 13th feels like headline news. Individuals and families who are homeless, or facing homelessness in the near future including those living in Single Room Occupancy (SRO’s) units and those couch surfing, are encouraged to apply for the waitlist starting January 13th , 2015. The application can only be filled out online at https://sfha.apply4housing.com.
